Korean Essay Generalization: -

Korean argumentative essays generalize a claim with -기 마련이다 (경쟁이 붙으면 가격은 내려가기 마련이다 — prices are bound to fall when competition kicks in), state a rule with -는 법이다 (노력하면 성공하는 법이다 — effort is the way to success), and flag a tendency with -기가 쉽다 (오해하기가 쉽다 — it's easy to misunderstand). L5-14 🎯 Level 5 · TOPIK 5 essay generalization ⚡ 5-Q quiz at the end

A strong essay doesn’t just describe one case — it generalizes from it, and Korean has three workhorses for the job: -기 마련이다 asserts a natural inevitability (경쟁이 붙으면 가격은 내려가기 마련이다 — prices are bound to fall when competition kicks in), -는 법이다 states a principle as if it were a rule (노력하면 성공하는 법이다 — effort is the way to success), and -기가 쉽다 flags a tendency or risk (준비 없이 시작하면 실패하기가 쉽다 — starting unprepared, you easily fail). This is the second lesson in the TOPIK II writing-54 thread, where you turn a planned outline into argued claims.

You already learned to pose the essay’s question with -는가 and sketch an outline; now you move from the question to the claims of the 본론. Generalizing is what makes a body paragraph read like an argument instead of an anecdote — but generalize too hard and one counterexample sinks you. Start with the vocabulary of claims and tendencies.

It’s bound to happen — -

To state that an outcome is natural and inevitable — the way things go — attach -기 마련이다 to a verb or adjective stem. It’s the essay writer’s “is bound to / naturally tends to.”

-기 마련이다 — INEVITABLE
V/A-기 마련이다 (is bound to / naturally happens)

경쟁이 붙으면 가격은 내려가기 마련이다 = when competition kicks in, prices are bound to fall 사람은 누구나 실수하기 마련이다 = anyone is bound to make mistakes 편한 길만 찾으면 실력은 떨어지기 마련이다 = chase only the easy path and your skills are bound to slip 꾸준히 하면 늘기 마련이다 = keep at it steadily and you’re bound to improve

It frames the result as something that naturally follows — a safe, reasoned generalization. Pair it with a conditional (-으면) to read as “if X, then naturally Y.” A common variant is -게 마련이다 with the same meaning (떨어지게 마련이다).

That’s the way it works — -

To state a claim as a principle or rule — almost proverbial — use -는 법이다 (verbs) or -(으)ㄴ 법이다 (adjectives).

IT'S THE RULE
V-는 법이다 · A-(으)ㄴ 법이다 (it's the way / as a rule)

노력하면 성공하는 법이다 = effort is the way to success (as a rule) 급할수록 돌아가는 법이다 = the more you rush, the more you should go around (proverb) 세상에 공짜는 없는 법이다 = there’s no such thing as a free lunch 뿌린 대로 거두는 법이다 = you reap what you sow

Where -기 마련이다 says “this naturally happens,” -는 법이다 says “this is how the world works” — a stated principle. It carries weight, so reserve it for claims you mean to assert firmly.

You’ll easily end up…

To flag a tendency or risk — “you easily end up doing X” — use -기가 쉽다. For a stronger, almost-always-bad warning, use -기 십상이다.

V-기가 쉽다 (prone to) · V-기 십상이다 (apt to, bad result)

서두르면 실수하기가 쉽다 = if you rush, it’s easy to slip up 맥락 없이 읽으면 오해하기가 쉽다 = read without context and you easily misunderstand 준비 없이 시작하면 실패하기 십상이다 = start unprepared and you’re apt to fail 욕심을 부리면 다치기 십상이다 = get greedy and you’re apt to get hurt

These two introduce the pitfall you’ll then argue against. -기가 쉽다 is neutral-leaning (“readily happens”); -기 십상이다 is a sharper warning, reserved for outcomes you clearly don’t want.

A generalized body paragraph

Here’s how the three forms combine into one 본론 paragraph — assert, qualify, warn:

Notice the rhythm: a hedged generalization (대체로 … 마련이다), a principle (법이다), then a warning (십상이다) that sets up the qualified conclusion. That’s a level-5 body paragraph.

Debating a generalization with a study partner

Two test-takers pressure-testing a claim — every form from this lesson, live:

💬 ESSAY PREP -기 마련이다 + -는 법이다 + -기가 쉽다 live
본론 주장으로 ‘경쟁하면 가격은 내려간다’ 어때? For the body claim, how about “competition lowers prices”?
Good. But don’t state it flatly — generalize it as “are bound to fall.”
Doesn’t it sound too 100%? There are exceptions, right?
That’s why we add “generally” — a hasty generalization gets refuted easily.
And when I want to state it strongly, like a principle?
Then use “-는 법이다” — like “there’s no free lunch.”
Should we add a sentence warning of a risk too?
Yeah — let’s close with “drop quality and you’re apt to lose trust.”

There’s your generalized paragraph: assert with -기 마련이다, elevate to a principle with -는 법이다, warn with -기 십상이다 — and always hedge the absolute claim. The next lesson links cause to effect.

FAQ

What’s the difference between -기 마련이다, -는 법이다, and -기 십상이다? All three generalize, but with different flavors. -기 마련이다 frames an outcome as natural and inevitable — ‘경쟁이 붙으면 가격은 내려가기 마련이다’ (prices are bound to fall). -는 법이다 frames it as a principle or rule, almost proverbial — ‘노력하면 성공하는 법이다’ (effort is the way to success); it sounds like a stated truth about how the world works. -기 십상이다 is the warning version: ‘likely to, and that’s bad’ — ‘서두르면 실수하기 십상이다’ (if you rush you’re apt to slip up), nearly always for unwanted results. In a 54-번 essay, reach for 마련이다/법이다 to assert a general truth, and 십상이다 (or its milder cousin -기가 쉽다) to flag a risk. They make your body paragraphs sound like reasoned claims rather than isolated observations.

How is -기가 쉽다 different from just saying 쉬워요 (it’s easy)? 쉬워요 describes a task as not difficult — ‘이 문제는 쉬워요’ (this problem is easy). -기가 쉽다 attaches to an action and means ‘is prone to / easily ends up,’ usually pointing at a tendency or risk — ‘오해하기가 쉽다’ (it’s easy to misunderstand / one easily misunderstands), ‘잊어버리기가 쉽다’ (it’s easy to forget). The subject isn’t that the action is simple to perform; it’s that the outcome happens readily, often by accident. Its near-synonym -기 십상이다 sharpens this to ‘apt to, with a bad result.’ In essays, -기가 쉽다 is a clean way to introduce a pitfall before you argue how to avoid it.

Won’t an examiner penalize me for over-generalizing in the writing section? Over-generalizing — claiming ‘모두’ (everyone) or ‘항상’ (always) without nuance — does weaken an argument, because one counterexample sinks an absolute claim. The fix is not to avoid generalizations (they’re the backbone of an argument) but to hedge them. Pair -기 마련이다 / -는 법이다 with softeners like 대체로 (generally), -는 경우가 많다 (it’s often the case that), or 일반적으로 (in general): ‘경쟁이 치열해지면 가격은 대체로 내려가기 마련이다.’ This shows the examiner you can make a strong claim and acknowledge its limits — exactly the balanced reasoning a level-5 essay rewards. Generalize boldly, then qualify.
