Korean summer vacation culture is built around one goal: escaping the heat. Between late July and mid-August, offices empty out, beaches fill up, and everyone’s talking about 휴가 (vacation) and 피서 (getting away from the heat). Here’s the vocabulary to understand how Koreans plan and talk about their summer break.
Vacation and peak season basics
Before picking a destination, there are a few key words that shape how Koreans think about timing a trip.
Most Koreans try to plan around 성수기, either embracing the crowds for the classic beach experience or dodging them by traveling just before or after.
Beaches, valleys, and water play
Once the destination is decided, the activities all fall under one idea: getting in or near the water.
Beach towns get packed in 성수기, so many locals prefer a quieter 계곡 trip in the mountains, where cool stream water offers the same relief from the heat without the crowds. If you’d rather talk about the rainy stretch that usually comes before all this, our post on Korean monsoon season words covers that separately.
Booking ahead and travel talk
The last piece of the puzzle is logistics — because good spots don’t stay available for long.
숙소 예약 (suk-so ye-yak) means “booking accommodation,” and it’s something Koreans start weeks before 성수기 hits, since popular beach towns and valley resorts sell out fast. A common phrase is 숙소 미리 예약했어요 (“I booked accommodation in advance”). For more on discussing upcoming trips, see our guide to Korean travel plans, and for the actual booking phrases, check making reservations in Korean — useful whether you’re calling a 펜션 (pension, a small guesthouse) or a beachside hotel.
Frequently asked questions
What does 피서 mean, and how is it different from 휴가?
휴가 (hyu-ga) is the general word for 'vacation' or 'time off,' used for any leave from work or school. 피서 (pi-seo) specifically means 'escaping the summer heat' — literally going somewhere cooler, like a beach, valley, or mountain resort.
So Koreans might say 휴가 때 피서 가요 ('during my vacation, I'm going somewhere to escape the heat'), using both words together naturally.
What are 성수기 and 비수기?
성수기 (seong-su-gi) is 'peak season' — the busiest, most expensive time to travel, which for Korean beaches and resorts is late July through mid-August. 비수기 (bi-su-gi) is 'off-season,' when prices drop and it's easier to book a room.
Travel sites and hotel listings use these words constantly, so recognizing them helps you spot good deals or expect crowds.
What are the main ways Koreans cool off in summer?
물놀이 (mul-nol-i, water play) covers everything from splashing at a pool to a river outing. Popular spots include 해수욕장 (beach), 계곡 (mountain valley with cool streams), and 워터파크 (water park).
Many families combine this with 숙소 예약 (booking accommodation) well ahead of 성수기, since the best spots fill up fast once the peak season starts.
