One of the most Korean things you’ll notice is that people drink iced americano constantly — in summer, sure, but also in the dead of winter. There’s even slang for it. As the heat arrives, here’s the Korean behind Korea’s iced-coffee culture, plus exactly how to order in a cafe.

The iced-coffee vocabulary

These are the words at the heart of Korean cafe culture.

Illustration of 커피, a cup of coffee
커피
keo-pi
coffee
커피 한 잔 마실래요? — want to grab a coffee?
아아
a-a
iced americano (short for 아이스 아메리카노)
저는 아아 주세요 — I'll have an iced americano

얼음
eo-reum

얼음 많이 넣어 주세요 — lots of ice, please
카페

cafe
카페에서 만나요 — let's meet at the cafe

The legendary slang here is 얼죽아 — short for 얼어 죽어도 아이스 아메리카노, “iced americano even if I freeze to death.” It’s the badge of honor for Koreans who order iced coffee in January, and it’s genuinely a thing: cafes keep selling 아아 right through winter.

Ordering like a regular

Korean cafe ordering follows one reliable pattern.

한 잔
han jan
one cup/glass (잔 = counter for drinks)
아이스 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요 — one iced americano, please
주세요
ju-se-yo
please give me ~
아아 두 잔 주세요 — two iced americanos, please

Put them together: [drink] + 한 잔 + 주세요. Staff will often ask 따뜻한 거요, 아이스요? (hot or iced?), and you just answer 아이스요. Practice the full ordering flow in our lesson on ordering food and drinks in Korean, and see more Korean drink words and Korean food vocabulary.

One usage note: 차갑다 vs 춥다

Both mean “cold,” but they don’t mix. 차갑다 is for things you touch — 커피가 차가워요 (the coffee is cold), 얼음이 차가워요 (the ice is cold). 춥다 is for the weather or how your body feels — 겨울에 추워요 (it’s cold in winter). So your 아아 is 차갑다, but the winter day you stubbornly drink it on is 춥다. That single distinction — cold drink vs cold weather — is exactly what makes 얼죽아 such a perfect, funny phrase: you choose the 차가운 drink even when the world outside is 춥다.

Frequently asked questions

What does 아아 mean in Korean?

아아 (a-a) is the everyday short form of 아이스 아메리카노 (iced americano). Koreans love abbreviating, and the iced americano is so universal that it gets its own two-syllable nickname.

The hot version, 따뜻한 아메리카노, gets shortened to 따아 (tta-a). So when someone says 아아 한 잔 (one a-a), they mean one iced americano — by far the most-ordered drink in any Korean cafe.

What does 얼죽아 mean?

얼죽아 (eol-juk-a) is a famous slang abbreviation of 얼어 죽어도 아이스 아메리카노 — 'iced americano even if I freeze to death. ' It describes people who drink iced coffee no matter how cold it is outside, including the middle of a Korean winter.

It's half a joke and half a genuine national habit: cafes sell iced americano in December, and calling yourself 얼죽아 is a tiny piece of cultural identity.

How do you order coffee in a Korean cafe?

The core pattern is [drink] + 한 잔 + 주세요 — 아이스 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요 means 'one iced americano, please. ' 잔 is the counter for cups/glasses.

You'll also hear staff ask 따뜻한 거요, 아이스요? (hot or iced?

). To say 'for here' it's 먹고 갈게요 and 'to go' is 가져갈게요 or 테이크아웃.

With just 한 잔 주세요 and the drink name, you can order anywhere.
