The core grammar, in summary boxes
A grade-2 sentence has texture. Here is the machinery you now control, gathered into review boxes.
어제 산 옷 = the clothes I bought · 웃는 사람 = a smiling person · 먹을 음식 = food to eat (past -은 / present -는 / future -을) 가 본 적이 있어요 = I’ve been (experience) · 온 지 1년 됐어요 = it’s been a year since I came
비가 오니까 / 와서 / 오기 때문에 = because it rains · 시간이 있으면 = if I have time · 좋아하게 됐어요 = I’ve come to like it 시작하겠습니다 = I’ll begin (formal 합니다체) · 밥 먹자 = let’s eat (casual 반말) — you can now pick the right level
Can you do these 10 things?
Answer honestly — every no points to its lesson, and twenty minutes of review fixes it.
- Modify a noun three ways: 산 옷, 웃는 사람, 먹을 음식 (L3–L4, L14)
- Say what you’ve experienced: 가 본 적이 있어요 (L13)
- Count elapsed time: 온 지 1년 됐어요 (L13)
- Set a condition: 시간이 있으면 갈게요 (L10, L2)
- Give three kinds of reason: -니까, -아/어서, -기 때문에 (L20)
- Ask permission and prohibition: -어도 돼요?, -으면 안 돼요 (L8)
- Soften and react: -는 것 같아요, -지요?, -네요 (L1, L11)
- Narrate change: 좋아하게 됐어요, 날마다 운동해요 (L23)
- Switch into formal 합니다체 for a presentation (L21)
- Switch into 반말 with a close friend — after asking first (L22)
Eight or more: grade 2 is genuinely done. Five to seven: skim the flagged chapters this week. Under five: rerun chapters 3–6 — they compound everything earlier.
Your mini TOPIK I
The quiz on this page works like a TOPIK I warm-up: one noun-modifier, one experience form, one condition, one reason, one register-appropriate dialogue — all original, all solvable with grade-2 tools. Comfortable? You are pacing right for level 2.
The graduation chat
Every bubble runs on grade-2 machinery — reactions, reasons, change-of-state, noun-modifiers, and 반말, all woven naturally. That is the real certificate.
What opens up in grade 3
Grade 2 gave your sentences texture; grade 3 gives them range: indirect quotation (-다고 하다 — reporting what others said), passive and causative verbs, contrast and concession connectors, and the written-versus-spoken style split you’ll need for real reading. Grade 3 lessons are in production — until they land, take the level test to confirm your placement and keep the vocabulary packs in rotation.
FAQ
Is grade 2 equal to TOPIK level 2? Closely. This course follows the Korean national standard curriculum (국제 통용 한국어 표준 교육과정), and its grade 2 maps onto TOPIK I level 2 territory: roughly 1,500–2,000 words cumulatively and all 45 grade-2 grammar items, every one of which you have now met. The real exam adds timed listening and reading, so finish with timed TOPIK I-format sets. Together, grades 1 and 2 cover the full TOPIK I (levels 1–2) grammar core.
What were the biggest grammar upgrades in grade 2? Four stand out. First, noun-modifying forms (관형형: -은/-는/-을) — the engine behind phrases like “the food I ate.” Second, experience and elapsed time with -은 적이 있다 and -은 지. Third, conditions and reasons: -(으)면, -기 때문에, -니까. Fourth, register control — the formal 합니다체 and casual 반말, plus change-of-state -게 되다. Add connectors like -는데, -으면서, and -다가, and you can now build layered, natural sentences.
What should I learn next after grade 2? Grade 3 — intermediate Korean. The headline upgrades: indirect quotation (-다고 하다, reporting what others said), passive and causative verbs, richer connectors for contrast and concession, and the written/spoken style split you will need for reading. Grade 3 lessons are in production. Meanwhile, take the level test to confirm grade 2 is solid, keep the vocabulary packs in rotation, and try a full timed TOPIK I practice set.
Next: Level 3 begins — catching up at the 어학당 with -는 중이다. Previous: change stories — -게 되다. Full path: curriculum hub.
