The core grammar, in summary boxes
Grade 3 is the level of texts. Here is the machinery you now control, gathered into review boxes.
친구가 “고마워”라고 했어요 = direct quote · 내일 온다고 했어요 / 어디 가냐고 물었어요 = indirect statement & question 도와 달라고 했어요 = indirect request · 비가 온다. 그러나 기분은 좋다. = 문어체 (plain written + -으나)
문이 열렸어요 / 닫혀 있어요 = passive (리/히) + resulting state · 만들어졌어요 = -어지다 passive 합격하도록 노력해요 = so that · 싼 대신에 멀어요 = trade-off · 자주 가던 카페 = recollection
Can you do these 10 things?
Answer honestly — every no points to its lesson, and twenty minutes of review fixes it.
- Report a statement and a question: 온다고 했어요, 가냐고 물었어요 (L22)
- Report a command and a request: 오라고 했어요, 도와 달라고 했어요 (L23)
- Write in 문어체: 오늘은 비가 온다 (L15)
- Make a passive: 문이 열렸어요, 닫혀 있어요 (L26)
- Read a 보도체 headline: 장마가 시작된다고 합니다 (L27)
- State a purpose two ways: -도록, -기 위해 (L13–L14)
- Frame a trade-off: 싼 대신에 멀어요, 비싼 반면 좋아요 (L9)
- Guess from evidence: 싸웠나 봐요, 바쁜 모양이에요 (L5)
- Recall vividly with -던/-던데: 멋있던데요 (L19)
- Switch into 반말 with a friend — 말 놓자, 어디 가니? (L20)
Eight or more: grade 3 is genuinely done. Five to seven: skim the flagged chapters this week. Under five: rerun chapters 4 and 6 — quotation and written style carry the most weight.
Your mini TOPIK II
The quiz on this page works like a TOPIK II warm-up: one indirect quote, one passive, one written-style form, one connector, and one 보도체 news sentence — all original, all solvable with grade-3 tools. Comfortable here? You are pacing right for level 3. Next, add timed reading sets and try the short-answer writing items (문항 51–52) in plain 문어체.
The graduation chat
Every bubble runs on grade-3 machinery — reported speech, -을 만큼, 반말, purpose, and a touch of 문어체, all woven naturally. That is the real certificate.
What opens up in grade 4
Grade 3 gave your Korean range; grade 4 gives it polish: causative verbs, quotation contractions (-대요, -냬요, -래요), the written-register grammar of essays and reports, statistics-and-graph description for the TOPIK II writing task, and the idioms and 한자어 that fill the media. Grade 4 lessons are in production — until they land, take the level test to confirm your placement and keep the vocabulary packs in rotation.
FAQ
Is grade 3 equal to TOPIK level 3? Closely. This course follows the Korean national standard curriculum (국제 통용 한국어 표준 교육과정), and grade 3 maps onto TOPIK II level 3 territory: roughly 3,000 words cumulatively and all 67 grade-3 grammar items, every one of which you have now met. Grade 3 is your entry into TOPIK II — the level with no separate listening/reading split and a writing section. Finish by doing timed TOPIK II reading sets and trying the short-answer writing (문항 51–52) in plain 문어체.
What were the biggest upgrades in grade 3? Four. First, reported speech — direct (라고 하다) and indirect quotation (-다고 / -냐고 / -으라고 / -자고 / -어 달라고), the spine of grade 3. Second, the written style (문어체 -ㄴ다/-는다, -으나) that unlocks diaries, captions, and news. Third, passive verbs (이/히/리/기, -어지다, -어 있다). Fourth, a richer connector set for purpose, trade-offs, and recollection: -도록, -기 위해, -는 대신에, -는 반면, -던/-던데, -었더니. Together they take you from surviving a conversation to reading a text.
What should I learn next after grade 3? Grade 4 — upper-intermediate, deeper into TOPIK II. The headline upgrades: causative verbs, indirect-quotation contractions (-대요, -냬요, -래요), written-register grammar for essays and reports, statistics and graph description for the TOPIK II writing task (문항 53), and idioms and 한자어 for media. Meanwhile, take the level test to confirm grade 3 is solid, keep the vocabulary packs in rotation, and run a full timed TOPIK II reading set.
